They say artist see the world differently.
I didn't set out to paint an upside-down tree, I was inspired! 
This small 4"x8" Original Walnut Oil on Stretched Canvas was painted plein air (outside from life).
Could I have shrunk everything down and painted both the tree and it's reflection? Sure, but the tree itself wasn't what drew me in. It was the reflection, half in shade and half in sun. At first I didn't know why I was compelled to paint it. But I absolutely learned so much during the process.
I learned the side in shade was so much warmer. The water was warmer shades of blue, forcing me to add red, creating purples. And when I moved to the sunny side, it was so much cooler. The water was bright blue, even having turquoise and emerald highlights. There was no emerald in the shady side and no purples in the sunny side.  
Then I moved to the reflected tree. The half of the tree in shade was also warmer, forcing me to add orange and brown to the greens, de-saturating the colors. Then with the sunny tree reflection, I used my brightest yellows and greens to create a hue saturated side. The shadows of the leaves in the shade were brown while the shadows of the leaves in the sun were blue. 
This was a lesson I needed to learn and it taught me so much about light and shadows. 
So grateful for my time at Hermann Farm and the Hermann Plein Air Festival. I love learning, and this was truly a painting I don't think I would have painted had I not been there, ready to learn how to paint a tree reflection half in shadows.
The painting is wired and ready to hang. Or it can be set on a desk of shelf. You can choose to frame the peice at a local framer or leave it as it is.
